UK International Sportsperson visa - trophy and medal

The International Sportsperson visa is the UK route for elite athletes and qualified coaches established at the top of their sport. This 2026 guide explains the all-important Governing Body Endorsement, the (lack of a) salary rule, how long it lasts, and the path to settlement.

Who is it for?

Elite athletes and qualified coaches who are internationally established at the highest level and will make a significant contribution to their sport in the UK — sponsored by a licensed club or organisation.

Governing Body Endorsement (GBE)

The cornerstone is a Governing Body Endorsement from the relevant UK sports governing body, confirming your level and contribution. For football, the FA uses a points-based system (you need 15 points across criteria such as international appearances and the quality of your clubs and leagues). Each sport has its own criteria.

Salary and length

There’s no minimum salary for the visa itself. You can be granted up to 3 years for longer contracts (or your employment period + 14 days), and the visa can be extended. You’ll need a Certificate of Sponsorship as well as the GBE.

Settlement

After 5 years you can apply for indefinite leave to remain, provided you earn at least £35,800 from your main sponsored job (lower than the Skilled Worker level), have no more than 180 days abroad a year, meet English at B1 and pass the Life in the UK Test. The ILR fee is currently £3,029.
