UK Religious Worker visa - arched doorway with light

The Religious Worker visa is the Temporary Work route for people coming to support a UK religious institution — working in a religious order or in non-pastoral roles. This 2026 guide explains who it’s for, how it differs from the Minister of Religion route, the length, cost and cooling-off rule.

What is it for?

It covers work in a religious order or non-pastoral roles that support a religious organisation’s activities. It replaced the old T5 Religious Worker route.

Religious Worker vs Minister of Religion

If your work is mainly pastoral (leading a congregation), that’s the longer-term Minister of Religion route. Work that is mainly non-pastoral — or supporting a religious order — belongs on this temporary route. Pastoral leaders can’t use this route for what should be Minister of Religion work.

Length and sponsorship

You can stay up to 24 months (or your Certificate of Sponsorship time + 28 days). You need a Certificate of Sponsorship from a licensed sponsor, and your work must relate to that organisation’s activities.

Cost and cooling-off

The application fee is modest (around £259 at the time of writing — confirm the current amount on GOV.UK), plus the IHS; you’ll also need about £1,270 in savings. Note the 12-month cooling-off period if you’ve recently been in the UK as a religious or charity worker.
