UK Windrush Scheme - ship arriving with the sun

The Windrush Scheme lets members of the Windrush generation and their families get free proof of their right to live in the UK — and, for many, free British citizenship. This 2026 guide explains who’s eligible, what it covers, how to apply, and the separate compensation scheme.

Who is eligible?

You may be able to apply if any of these is true:

  • you came to the UK from a Commonwealth country before 1973;
  • your parents came from a Commonwealth country before 1973;
  • you came from any country before 31 December 1988 and are now settled in the UK.

It’s completely free

There’s no fee for a Windrush Scheme application. For those eligible for British citizenship through the scheme, the application is free and the Life in the UK Test and English requirement are waived, with free biometric enrolment too.

What it gives you

Free documentation proving your right to live and work in the UK — and, where you qualify, British citizenship. Your status can then be held digitally in a UKVI account.

How to apply

Use the Windrush Scheme application form on GOV.UK (a UK version and an Overseas version), or call the Windrush Helpline on 0800 678 1925 for help and a posted form.

The Windrush Compensation Scheme

Separately, the Windrush Compensation Scheme compensates people who suffered because they couldn’t prove their status — for example losing work, healthcare, benefits or housing, or facing immigration action. It’s a distinct application from the documentation scheme.
