The citizenship ceremony is the final, celebratory step of becoming British — the moment you officially receive your citizenship. If your naturalisation (or registration) has been approved, here’s what to expect at your ceremony in 2026, from the invitation to the oath and your certificate.
When and where
After approval you’ll get an invitation and must book your ceremony within 3 months (the Home Office asks you to book within 21 days of the letter). Your local council organises it — usually a group ceremony, though you can ask for a private one. If you don’t attend within the time limit without a good reason, your grant can lapse.
What happens at the ceremony
A council officer checks your invitation and ID, then a presiding officer (often the Mayor or a senior registrar) gives a short welcome. You then make:
- an oath of allegiance (or an affirmation if you prefer not to swear by God); and
- the pledge to respect the UK’s rights, freedoms and laws.
At the end you’re presented with your certificate of British citizenship and a welcome pack. There are usually photos and sometimes the national anthem.
Fees and guests
The standard ceremony fee (£130) is already included in your naturalisation application fee, so there’s nothing extra for a group ceremony. A private individual ceremony can cost around £200, depending on the council. You can usually bring 2 guests.
After the ceremony
Your certificate is proof you’re British. Look after it — you’ll need it to apply for a British passport, which is the usual next step. (Keep it safe; replacements cost money and take time.)
