Register a child as British citizen - certificate

Not every child born in the UK is automatically British — but many can become British citizens by registration using form MN1. This 2026 guide explains the main routes (including the 10-year rule for UK-born children), the fee, biometrics, and how registration differs from naturalisation.

Main ways a child can register

  • Born in the UK and lived here 10 years — a child born in the UK who has lived here for the first 10 years of their life can register, regardless of their parents’ immigration status (absences are expected to be limited, broadly up to 90 days a year, with discretion).
  • A parent becomes British or settled — a child born in the UK whose parent later gets British citizenship or indefinite leave to remain can usually register.
  • Discretionary registration — the Home Office can register a child where their future clearly lies in the UK (for example both parents are British or settled).

Cost and process

The registration fee is currently around £1,214 per child (a fee waiver may be available in some cases). If the child turns 18 during the process, a £130 citizenship ceremony fee applies and they must take the oath. You apply on form MN1 and provide supporting documents.

Biometrics

Every child attends a UKVCAS appointment for a digital photo; children aged 5 and over also give fingerprints.

Registration vs naturalisation

Children under 18 register (MN1); adults naturalise (see our naturalisation guide). Once registered, a child can get a British passport, and the UK allows dual citizenship.
