Switch to Skilled Worker - graduate cap to briefcase

Finished your studies, or on a Graduate visa, and landed a sponsored job? You can usually switch to the Skilled Worker visa from inside the UK — no need to go home. This 2026 guide covers eligibility, salary, the in-country process and the route to settlement.

Can you switch in the UK?

Yes. You can switch in-country from routes such as Graduate or Student while your current visa is valid — your permission is automatically extended under section 3C while a decision is pending, so you stay lawful. Students can usually switch once they’ve completed their course (or are close to completion).

What you need

  • a job offer from a licensed sponsor with a defined Certificate of Sponsorship;
  • an eligible graduate-level (RQF Level 6) role — only degree-level jobs are now sponsorable;
  • English at B2 (from 8 January 2026) — a UK degree usually meets this;
  • maintenance funds where required.

Salary

The general threshold in 2026 is £41,700 a year (or £17.13/hour), or the going rate for the role — whichever is higher. Helpfully, recent graduates and other “new entrants” can qualify on 70% of the going rate, as long as pay is at least £33,400.

Timing and settlement

Standard processing is about 8 weeks from your biometrics (priority ~5 working days). Time on the Skilled Worker visa counts towards indefinite leave to remain after 5 years — so switching turns post-study time into a long-term route.
