You will usually receive a UK passport within three weeks of HM Passport Office receiving your documents if you apply from inside the UK. That is the current HMPO guidance, checked on . It is not a guaranteed delivery date, and applications from abroad have separate timescales.
The useful question is where you are in the process: still preparing to apply, waiting for documents to reach HMPO, or waiting after they have arrived. The three-week period does not start simply because you paid online.
Standard applications: when to start counting
Use the date HMPO received your supporting documents. If it needs more information or an interview, your application can take longer; HMPO says it will tell you within three weeks. Check messages and respond to requests promptly.
The official guidance does not give separate universal estimates of four to six weeks for a first adult passport or three to six weeks for a child’s passport. Extra checks depend on the application. Likewise, older advice to allow ten weeks should not be presented as today’s standard UK processing time.
Do not book travel until you have a valid passport. A renewal gets a different passport number, which matters when entering document details for a booking.
Need a passport urgently?
If you have not already applied, check eligibility and appointments through GOV.UK’s urgent passport service. The service time runs from the appointment, so include the wait for an available slot in your plans.
1 Week Fast Track
Your passport is delivered one week after your appointment. The earliest appointment is the day after you apply. This service covers eligible renewals, changes and replacements, and child passports, including a first child passport. It does not cover a first adult passport.
1 Day Premium
You collect the passport four hours after the appointment. The earliest appointment is two days after you apply, so “same day” does not mean you can start the whole process and receive a passport today. This service is for eligible adult renewals; the previous passport must have been issued after 31 December 2001.
Current urgent service fees
- Fast Track adult: £192 for a standard passport; £206 for a frequent traveller passport.
- Fast Track child: £156.50 for a standard passport; £170.50 for a frequent traveller passport.
- Premium adult renewal: £239.50 for a standard passport; £253.50 for a frequent traveller passport.
Apply online with a digital photo, book the appointment and bring the documents specified for your application. Check the passport service’s eligibility and fee details before paying. These urgent services are not available for applications made from outside the UK.
Already applied? Track it before paying for anything else
Do not submit a second passport application to try to speed up the first. GOV.UK says this will not make it faster, and an additional application can incur a £34.50 administration charge.
- Open the official passport tracking page and choose the route you used: online, Digital Check and Send, or a paper form.
- Use the application reference from your confirmation. The page explains how to find the right reference and how tracking differs for paper applications.
- Check whether HMPO is waiting for a document, a photo or another response from you.
- If you need help with a delay, contact the Passport Adviceline with your reference and the date your documents were received.
For urgent travel because of medical treatment, serious illness or a death involving a friend or family member, or urgent government business, call the Adviceline to explain the circumstances.
Applying from abroad
Use the overseas passport service and select the country and application type. It provides the relevant documents, costs and expected time. A figure shown for one country is not an estimate for every overseas application.
A UK eVisa does not replace a British passport. If you are renewing, our British passport renewal guide explains the application itself.
Avoiding preventable delays
Check that names and dates match your supporting documents, use a photo that meets the requirements, and send what HMPO asks for. Our passport photo guide covers the photo rules. Keep proof of posting and watch for requests for a replacement photo or further documents.
After approval, watch for the dispatch and delivery updates. Your passport and supporting documents can arrive separately; an approval message is not confirmation that both have reached you. See HMPO’s guidance on receiving your passport and documents.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a child’s passport urgently?
Eligible child applications can use 1 Week Fast Track, including a first child passport. The 1 Day Premium service is for adult renewals.
Can I use Fast Track for my first adult passport?
No. The urgent Fast Track and Premium services are not available for a first adult passport.
Why do passport waiting-time websites show different figures?
Some use reports from applicants rather than HMPO’s guidance. Their samples, application types and start dates differ. A community average does not predict when your particular passport will arrive.
