The Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) route lets invited experts do short, pre-arranged paid work in the UK — and from 2026 it sits inside the Standard Visitor route rather than being a separate visa. This 2026 guide explains who qualifies, the activities allowed, the timing and the cost.
What is it?
It allows a recognised expert to come to the UK for a specific, pre-arranged paid engagement on the strength of a written invitation — without a sponsor. The key rule: the engagement must be completed within 1 month of arrival, even though you can visit for up to 6 months.
Who qualifies?
You may be invited if you’re a:
- professional artist, entertainer or musician;
- professional sportsperson;
- qualified lawyer representing a client;
- lecturer or conference speaker;
- academic acting as an examiner or assessor, or an air pilot examiner.
The work must relate directly to your expertise and profession overseas.
Cost and evidence
The dedicated up-to-1-month engagement costs around £100; alternatively you can use a Standard Visitor visa (£135 for 6 months). You’ll need a written invitation describing the engagement, proof of your professional status, evidence of funds — and, for performers, recent publicity or reviews.
Important limit
Ordinary visitors cannot do paid or unpaid work or be self-employed. Paid work is only allowed where it fits a permitted engagement; anything more requires a work route such as the Skilled Worker visa.
