UK Scale-up visa - growth chart and arrow

The Scale-up visa is one of the UK’s most flexible work routes: you’re sponsored for just the first 6 months, then you’re free to work for anyone. This 2026 guide explains who qualifies, the salary, what happens after the sponsored period, and how it leads to settlement.

What is the Scale-up visa?

It lets a skilled worker take a high-skilled job with a qualifying fast-growing UK “scale-up” business. Unlike the Skilled Worker visa, sponsorship is only needed at the start.

Requirements

  • a job offer from an authorised scale-up sponsor, with a Certificate of Sponsorship for a graduate-level role;
  • salary of at least £39,100 a year or the going rate — whichever is higher — for the first sponsored job;
  • English at B1.

After the first 6 months

Sponsorship is only required for the first 6 months. After that you no longer need a sponsor — you can work for any employer, be self-employed, or start your own business.

Extending and settling

You can usually extend without a sponsor if you meet the earnings rule — PAYE earnings at or above the threshold for at least 50% of your visa period. Time on the Scale-up visa counts towards indefinite leave to remain after 5 years.
