UK Adult Dependent Relative visa - caring hands and heart

The Adult Dependent Relative (ADR) visa lets an elderly parent or other dependent relative join family in the UK when they need long-term care — but it’s one of the hardest visas to get, with a success rate below 5%. This 2026 guide explains the requirements, the cost, and why so many applications fail.

Who can apply?

You can apply if you’re the parent, grandparent, sibling, or adult son or daughter of someone in the UK. Both you and your sponsor must be 18 or over, and your sponsor must be a British citizen or settled in the UK (or hold equivalent status).

The care requirement

You must need long-term personal care to do everyday tasks — washing, dressing, cooking — because of age, illness or disability. Crucially, you must also show that the required care is unavailable or unaffordable in your home country, even with practical and financial help from your UK family.

This last point is where most applications fail: if the Home Office thinks your UK relative could instead pay for adequate care in your home country, it will refuse. Strong, independent medical and country evidence is essential.

Cost and process

The application fee is £3,635 (from 8 April 2026, outside the UK with a settled sponsor), plus biometric enrolment, the IHS if applicable, and evidence costs (medical and country reports). A decision usually takes up to 12 weeks — and priority services aren’t available for this route.

Does it lead to settlement?

Yes — if your sponsor is settled or British, you’re usually granted indefinite leave straight away. Your sponsor must be able to maintain and accommodate you without public funds. (For partners and children, see the family visa routes instead.)
