The Child Student visa lets children aged 4 to 17 study at a UK independent (fee-paying) school. This 2026 guide explains who qualifies, how long the visa lasts, the parental-consent and funding rules, and how it differs from the adult Student visa.

Who can apply?

A child aged 4 to 17 with an unconditional offer from an independent school that’s licensed to sponsor child students. The school issues a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) for the application.

How long does it last?

  • Under 16 — the course length, up to 6 years, plus 4 months after it ends;
  • 16 or 17 — the course length, up to 3 years, plus 4 months afterwards.

You’ll need written consent from both parents or legal guardians (a single parent with sole custody can sign alone), confirming the child can study and live in the UK and the care arrangements. You must also show enough money to pay for the course and support the child.

How to apply

Apply online up to 6 months before the course starts; a decision usually takes about 3 weeks. A parent of a child under 12 can apply for the separate Parent of a Child Student visa to live nearby. At 16–17 a child may do limited part-time work. Children are charged the reduced IHS rate.
