The UK Student visa lets you study a degree or other eligible course at a licensed institution — and it’s the usual gateway to the Graduate (post-study work) visa. This 2026 guide covers the points you need, the money to show, costs, English and how to apply.
The 70-point requirement
The Student visa is points-based — you need 70 points, made up of:
- a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed student sponsor (valid 6 months);
- enough money for your course fees and living costs;
- the required English level — usually CEFR B2 for degree courses.
Money you must show
On top of any unpaid tuition on your CAS, you need maintenance funds of:
- £1,529 per month in London (up to 9 months = £13,761);
- £1,171 per month outside London (up to 9 months = £10,539).
The money must be held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of your application.
Cost
The application fee is currently around £524 (fees rose in 2026 — confirm on GOV.UK), plus the Immigration Health Surcharge at £776 per year of your visa.
How to apply — and family
Apply online up to 6 months before your course (from outside the UK) or 3 months (inside). A decision usually takes about 3 weeks from outside the UK. Note that since 2024 most students can’t bring dependants — this is mainly limited to postgraduate research and government-sponsored courses. After your studies you can often switch to the Graduate route or the Skilled Worker visa.
