UK Youth Mobility Scheme visa - globe and travel route

The Youth Mobility Scheme lets young people from certain countries live, work and study in the UK for up to two or three years — no job offer or sponsor required. This 2026 guide covers who’s eligible, the ballot, costs, what you can do, and how to stay longer.

Who can apply?

The scheme covers 13 countries and territories. Your age limit depends on nationality:

  • Aged 18–35: Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Korea.
  • Aged 18–30: Andorra, Iceland, Japan, Monaco, San Marino and Uruguay — plus certain British nationals (British overseas citizens, British overseas territories citizens and British nationals (overseas)).
  • Ballot required (aged 18–30): Hong Kong and Taiwan passport holders must be selected in a ballot before they can apply.

The ballot

Because demand exceeds places, Hong Kong and Taiwan applicants enter a free ballot, normally held in January/February and again in summer. In 2026 there are 1,000 places each for Hong Kong and Taiwan nationals. If selected, you have a limited window to apply.

How long and how much

  • 2 years for most nationalities; 3 years for Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
  • Application fee around £298–£319, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776/year).
  • You must show about £2,530 in savings.

What you can and can’t do

You can work in most jobs, be self-employed (with limits) and study. You cannot bring dependants on this visa, claim most public funds, or extend it. To stay longer you’d need to switch to another route such as the Skilled Worker visa if you qualify.
